How to Apply for USRAP from South Africa: What the Intake Questionnaire Actually Starts
The U.S. Embassy South Africa USRAP FAQ explains that individuals who meet the eligibility criteria and have not yet been contacted by a USRAP partner should complete the online USRAP Intake Questionnaire, often referred to as the UIQ. This is the starting point for many South African applicants who want to be considered for referral to the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.
However, completing the UIQ is not the same as being accepted into USRAP. It is not an approval. It is not a guarantee of referral. It is not a guarantee of interview, case number, security clearance, travel or resettlement. The questionnaire begins a review process. The information submitted may be considered by a referring organisation and then, if appropriate, by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration for access to USRAP.
Applicants must therefore take the intake stage seriously. The facts entered into the questionnaire may become the foundation of how the case is understood later. Family composition, dates, location, contact details, personal history, and the basis on which protection is sought should be approached carefully. A careless intake can create problems later if the facts are incomplete, inconsistent or poorly explained.
The FAQ states that individuals who have not yet been contacted by a USRAP partner to initiate referral or processing should complete the online questionnaire. This means that applicants should not assume that informal interest, social-media discussion or general eligibility talk is the same as formal case access. The process requires the correct channel.
The intake stage also requires patience. The FAQ explains that after submission, the application is reviewed by a referring organisation, Church World Service or Amerikaners. They may contact applicants if additional information or clarification is needed. If the applicant meets the qualifications for referral, PRM will then evaluate eligibility to access USRAP.
The fact that there are several review steps means applicants should avoid exaggerated expectations. The intake questionnaire is not a direct application to travel to the United States. It is a step toward possible referral and possible access to the refugee admissions process. The U.S. government remains the authority that determines access to USRAP.
Applicants should also be careful with contact details. The FAQ repeatedly stresses the importance of maintaining and checking the email address registered in the UIQ. If an applicant later changes address, email or phone number after being granted access to USRAP, RSC Africa must be notified immediately because this may affect processing.
For families, the intake stage should be treated as a structured record. Every included family member matters. If a person is included incorrectly or left out incorrectly, there may be later consequences. If family details change, or if someone is outside South Africa, or if a person already holds another U.S. status, the case should be reviewed carefully before assumptions are made.
The intake questionnaire is therefore both an opportunity and a risk point. It gives a person a route into possible review, but it also creates the first formal version of the case. A later USCIS interview, security review or document assessment may look back at earlier information. Applicants should not treat the UIQ as a casual form that can easily be corrected later.
USRAP intake questionnaire: new links and access problems
Searches for the USRAP intake form, refugee intake questionnaire or a USRAP intake questionnaire new link often reflect the same concern: an applicant cannot find the correct starting point or an earlier link no longer works. An access problem should be distinguished from a decision on eligibility. A replacement link circulated in a group is not, by itself, evidence that it is an authorised channel.
When reading a message attributed to the U.S. Embassy South Africa or another processing organisation, check the sender and the official channel independently before entering personal details. LexMigrate is an independent information and assistance service, not the Embassy, USCIS or RSC Africa, and cannot issue official intake links or guarantee access.
For applicants who have already submitted information, our guide to what happens after submitting the USRAP intake questionnaire addresses the next questions. Our separate explanation of USRAP processing time distinguishes waiting from a confirmed processing outcome. Do not send duplicate personal records to an unverified recipient simply because a link appears to have expired.
