UK Ancestry Visa South Africa

A five-year UK route for qualifying South Africans with a qualifying grandparent, with work rights and a potential path to settlement.

The UK Ancestry Visa is one of the most flexible UK immigration routes available to qualifying South Africans. It allows eligible Commonwealth citizens and certain other qualifying nationals to live and work in the United Kingdom for five years, with a potential route to settlement afterwards.

The key question is not simply whether you have British ancestry. The route depends on the nationality you hold, where your qualifying grandparent was born, whether you intend and are able to work in the UK, and whether you meet the maintenance and other immigration requirements.

LexMigrate provides attorney-led assistance with UK Ancestry Visa applications for South Africans, including eligibility assessment, application preparation and settlement planning.

Who can apply for a UK Ancestry Visa?

A UK Ancestry Visa may be available if you are a Commonwealth citizen, a British overseas citizen, a British overseas territories citizen, a British national (overseas), or a citizen of Zimbabwe, and you meet the ancestry and other eligibility requirements.

You must normally be aged 17 or over, be able to maintain and accommodate yourself and any dependants without access to public funds, and be able and intend to work in the UK.

The grandparent requirement

The route is based on a qualifying grandparent. In broad terms, you must show that at least one grandparent was born:

  • in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man;
  • before 31 March 1922 in what is now Ireland; or
  • on a ship or aircraft registered in the UK or belonging to the UK government.

Adoption can be relevant, and the rules do not require the parents or grandparents in the family line to have been married. UK Ancestry cannot, however, be claimed through a step-parent.

Can South Africans qualify through a UK-born grandparent?

Yes, a South African Commonwealth citizen may be able to qualify where the ancestry requirement and the remaining immigration requirements are met.

This is different from British citizenship by descent. A person may not be British automatically through a grandparent but may still qualify for a UK Ancestry Visa because the ancestry route has its own requirements.

If you are unsure whether you may already have British nationality instead, use our Free British Roots Quick Check before assuming that a visa is the correct route.

Do I need a job offer before applying?

A formal UK job offer is not necessarily required simply to make a UK Ancestry application. What matters is that you can and genuinely intend to work in the UK.

The evidence should make sense in the context of your qualifications, work history, plans and circumstances. A case should be prepared around the actual facts rather than using generic statements about an intention to find work.

How long is the UK Ancestry Visa valid?

The visa is granted for five years. During that period, the route allows work, including employment, self-employment, paid work and voluntary work, as well as study.

Your eligible partner and children may also be able to accompany or join you as dependants, subject to the applicable requirements.

Can I switch into UK Ancestry from inside the UK?

Normally, no. The UK Ancestry route requires entry clearance before travelling to the UK. It is therefore important to identify the correct route before entering the UK under another immigration category if UK Ancestry is the intended long-term route.

What financial requirement applies?

There is no simple fixed savings figure that applies to every UK Ancestry application. The decision maker must be satisfied that you can and will adequately maintain and accommodate yourself and any dependants without recourse to public funds.

Depending on the facts, credible third-party support may also be relevant. The financial picture should be consistent with your proposed move, family size and circumstances.

What documents are normally relevant?

The evidence depends on the family line and the individual application. We do not recommend using a generic one-size-fits-all document pack.

Broadly, an application may require evidence covering:

  • your identity and nationality;
  • your birth and the link to your parent;
  • your parent’s birth and the link to the qualifying grandparent;
  • the qualifying grandparent’s place of birth;
  • adoption or family-status evidence where relevant;
  • your intention and ability to work in the UK;
  • maintenance and accommodation;
  • dependants, where applicable; and
  • TB testing where required.

For South African families, unabridged birth certificates are often central to establishing the documentary chain between generations, but the exact evidence should be determined from the route and the records available.

Do South African applicants need a TB test?

South Africa is on the UK list of countries where tuberculosis screening may be required for applications to come to the UK for more than six months. A UK Ancestry applicant who meets the residence criteria under the TB rules will therefore normally need a valid certificate from a Home Office-approved clinic.

The certificate must come from an approved clinic. Do not arrange an ordinary private TB test and assume that it will satisfy the immigration requirement.

How much does a UK Ancestry Visa cost in 2026?

As at October 2026, the Home Office application fee for a UK Ancestry Visa from outside the UK is £726.

The Immigration Health Surcharge is payable in addition to the application fee. For most adult immigration applications the current rate is £1,035 per year, meaning the healthcare surcharge is a substantial part of the overall cost of a five-year Ancestry Visa.

Each dependant has their own application and associated charges. Fees can change, so applicants should confirm the current Home Office amount immediately before submission.

How long does the application take?

You can normally apply up to three months before you intend to travel. GOV.UK currently states that an applicant applying from outside the UK will usually receive a decision within three weeks after applying, proving identity and providing the supporting documents.

Faster decision services may be available depending on the visa application centre and Home Office service availability.

What happens at the visa application centre?

After submitting the online application, you will normally be directed to arrange the required identity and biometric process. The application system will tell you what you need to do, including the relevant visa application centre arrangements.

Can the UK Ancestry Visa lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain?

Potentially, yes. After five years on the UK Ancestry route, a qualifying applicant may be able to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Settlement is a separate application with its own requirements. Residence history, absences, continuing route requirements, English language requirements and the Life in the UK Test may all become relevant.

The earliest application date is generally 28 days before completing the qualifying five-year period. Planning for settlement should therefore start well before the end of the visa.

What if my absences from the UK are high?

Continuous residence can become one of the most important issues at the settlement stage. If you travel extensively, work internationally or spend long periods outside the UK, do not wait until the final year to calculate your absences.

LexMigrate can review travel history and identify potential continuous-residence issues before an ILR application is prepared.

Can I extend a UK Ancestry Visa instead of applying for ILR?

Yes. The UK Ancestry route can be extended for a further five years where the requirements continue to be met. There is no fixed maximum number of extensions under the current route.

As at October 2026, the application fee for an in-country UK Ancestry extension is £1,407 per person, in addition to the healthcare surcharge.

UK Ancestry Visa or British citizenship?

Do not assume that a visa is necessary simply because your British connection is through a parent or grandparent.

Some South Africans are already British automatically. Others may have a registration route under British nationality law. Others will not have a citizenship route but may have a strong UK Ancestry Visa claim.

If your family history includes a British parent, grandparent, British passport or older nationality record, it is sensible to identify the nationality position before committing to a five-year immigration route and the associated visa and healthcare costs.
